Abstract
As an interdisciplinary field connecting technology, human behavior, and organizational management, Information Systems (IS) has become an increasingly vibrant area of research amidst the ongoing digital transformation. In particular, "quantitative behavioral research"—which empirically investigates technology use by individuals and organizations—has emerged as a dominant research paradigm.
Drawing upon the 2025 editorial from Management Information Systems Quarterly (MISQ), this lecture will systematically review the evolution of IS research. It will outline its three fundamental research approaches (descriptive, relational, and experimental) and discuss the critical role of theory building alongside common methodologies like surveys and experimental design.
The presentation will also introduce the major academic journals in the IS discipline, current mainstream research topics, and publication standards. It will conclude by the field's research trends, methodological evolution, and discussing of future research directions.
